Infinity symbol with love and life script

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine black infinity symbol with the words love and life written in flowing script, one word on each loop of the symbol. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The tattoo sits at the upper right of the frame against pale skin, with a hand wearing a gold filigree ring and a thin band resting in the foreground against a white top.

The stamp has gone soft at one corner again, so you blow on it and press it twice to the page before the man in the grey coat can ask why. Behind him the queue bends back along the yellow line, past the kiosk nobody has used since the ferry was cut. You slide the passport back under the glass. Tucked inside its cover, folded to the size of a stamp, is a card with two words written in blue biro and joined by a single long loop, the two ends crossing in the middle like a knot in string.

He has not asked you to read it. Men who want to be waved through rarely do. But you have read it, and now the loop keeps turning in your head the way a tune does, round and round, the little crossing point looking like a gate you are meant to pass through and haven't.

Pell calls for the next file. You stamp the grey coat's entry, then the girl with the cello case, then a van driver who says he has been stopped four times this month and wants to know if that's a record. You don't answer. Each time the pen drifts back to the card in your jacket pocket, and each time you tell yourself it is only paperwork.

At six the shift ends. You lay the card under the kitchen lamp and turn it slowly. Written as a figure eight lying on its side, the words sit along the two curves, so you have to rotate the paper to read them both. Love on the left loop, life on the right. You pin it to the corkboard above the kettle, beside a timetable for a line that stopped running years ago, then go out into the rain, where the road runs on both ways at once.
