A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the Mary Ellen clears the breakwater at Newlyn, you have already mended forty fathoms of net on the quay, your fingers sore from the mesh needle. Your father says a thin moon is good for fishing because the light is low and the pilchards keep close to the surface. You have stopped arguing with him about it. You just watch the sliver hang over the harbour wall, pale as a bone button.

Tonight the skipper hands you the lantern and sends you to the bow. The sea is flat and black, so black that the moon's reflection breaks into small silver dots wherever a swell lifts it. You count them the way your grandmother counted stitches, in rings and scallops, each one answering the last. Somewhere past the Runnel Stone the nets go over, and the cork line hisses out like a long breath.

The haul comes up heavy and wrong. Half the net is torn, and in the tangle you find a tin lid tied to a length of cord, its face punched with circles inside circles and scalloped arcs like the lace on a christening shawl. Someone has scratched initials into the rim with a nail. You put it in your coat pocket without telling anyone.

Back on the quay you lay the lid under the lamp and trace the pattern with a stub of pencil. It matches nothing in the tide tables. But when you hold it up against the sky, the moon fits neatly inside the largest ring, and every dot of light on the water settles into its place.
