Globe tattoo on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single desk globe on a stand is drawn in thin black linework, showing outlined continents and a curved meridian ring. The lines are even and delicate with no shading, and the design sits on the inner forearm against a dark top and a white brick wall. The image is a close, well-lit photograph of the tattoo.

The brass stand has come loose again, and you are halfway up Ashcombe Lane with the globe tucked under your arm like a loaf. Mr Prowse gave it to you on Friday, said the Atlantic had worn through its paint and nobody would miss it in the cupboard. He did not say why he wanted it gone. The village keeps its secrets the way old paper keeps damp, quietly and everywhere.

The path into Hollin Wood is narrower than you remember. Beeches lean over it like neighbours listening at a door. You stop where the old boundary stone sits in the bracken and set the globe on top of it, so the North Atlantic faces the sky. The meridian ring catches a thread of light. Someone long ago inked the continents in lines so fine you can barely see where the coasts break. You trace South America with one finger, the way your grandmother taught you to find the Amazon before you could spell it.
Behind you, the church bell starts up for evensong, and you realise the sound comes from the far side of the wood, where there is no church at all. You think of the surveyors who came in spring, pacing the hedgerows with their chains and arguing over where Ashcombe ended and the rest of the country began. They had drawn the parish in pencil. You had asked what would happen to the lines once the pencil wore down.
You lift the globe and turn it once, slowly, until the place you were born spins under your palm and slides away. Then you walk back down the lane and leave the stone bare. Somewhere in the trees the bell stops mid-note, and the wood goes on keeping its own time.
