Dotwork globe showing Africa on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a circular globe with the continent of Africa and part of Europe at its centre, built from dense black dots. A ring of sparser dots forms the outer edge of the globe, and the stippled shading gives the landmass a soft, textured look. The design is in black ink only and sits centred on the forearm against a plain light background.

The lamp over the engraver's bench has been burning since the harbour church struck eleven, and you have not lifted your head from the copper plate in an hour. Each dot is a single prick of the steel point, and the plate needs nine thousand of them before the ink will hold Africa the way Madame Roux insists it be held: dark where the deserts are heaviest, thinning towards the coast. Outside, the cobbles of the Rue des Fabres are wet and empty, and a tram bell rings once somewhere below the hill.

Her note sits under the brass weight on the bench: the globe must be finished by Thursday, the outer ring must be sparser than the land, and the sea must stay bare. She told you once that the sea is the part people forget to look at. Your wrist aches. You set the point again at the Gulf of Guinea, press, lift, press, and each small black crater holds its shape under the lamp.

Near two, a cart rattles past and the window glass hums in its frame. You step back and see the problem at once: the ring of dots is too even, so the edge of the world looks like a rope rather than a horizon. You undo a whole arc with the scraper, swearing softly into the empty room, and begin again from the top of the Mediterranean, where Europe frays into grey.

By dawn the plate is cold and finished. You lay thin paper over it, rub the back with a cloth, and lift. The globe comes up pale on white, speckled like frost, and the ring around it seems to turn very slowly away from you. You fold the print once and leave it on Madame's desk, where she will find it before you have slept.
