Dotwork gradient band on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is shown with a solid black band, a thin white stripe and a second black band encircling the arm. Above the wrist, stippled dots grow denser toward the band and thin out towards the hand, creating a gradient effect. The black and grey ink sits against a plain dark background, with the hand clenched at the right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nine days out from Falmouth, the sea turned the colour of wet slate and the second mate ran out of things to say. Hal Pryce had spent the crossing rearranging the ship's stores in his head, sorting tins by weight, and when that failed he took the bosun's needle kit from the locker and began to stipple a dot on the back of his own hand.

The bosun, Tam Gerrity, watched him for an hour before he spoke. He had learned the trade in a Liverpool lodging house from an old man who charged a shilling a letter and never once looked up. 'Dots go in slow,' Tam said. 'Pressure's the trick, not speed. Let the ink find its own depth.' Hal's first band came out crooked, a black ring around his wrist like a dropped rope. Tam said it looked like a gate, so they called the next one that.

By the Azores they had a gradient, heavy and dark where the band sat, thinning to fine grey spatter toward the fingers. Each morning Hal added a dot for every watch he had stood, and each evening the light left the water a little earlier. He drew the last band with a steady hand and left a white stripe bare so the skin would keep a little light.

When the Scilly lights came up small and grey on the horizon, Hal closed his hand around the rail. The dots had faded almost to nothing near the knuckles, where he could barely find them with his thumb. Tam leaned over, squinted, and said the rest was only weather. Hal laughed and opened his fist to the lamp, and the ink caught the light the way the water had all the way across.
