Three fine lines wrapping a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is shown extended across the frame against a pale wooden plank floor. Three thin, unshaded black lines wrap fully around the arm in parallel, reading like a bracelet or band. The image is monochrome with a soft vignette, and the lines sit near the centre of the composition.

He had me tap the ash bands down a little at a time, walking the hammer round the cask so each one seated at the same depth. If one ran ahead of the others, he said, the staves would bulge and the whole thing would weep at the seams by Christmas.

He was a man who did not waste words, so when the brewery's new manager came down from the office with a clipboard and asked for two hoops on the next order, to save on ash, Mr Pryce only looked at the clipboard until the man went back up the stairs. Then he cut three hoops from the seasoned stock, heated them over the brazier until they smoked, and bent them round the oak. Two went on quickly. The third he drove slowly, listening to the note change as it bit.
The cask went out on the Tuesday lorry and came back in April, split along one stave. Mr Pryce did not say I told you so. He only took the offcut of ash from the bin, polished it with his thumb, and hung it on a nail by the door, where it has hung ever since. Every morning I pass it on the way to the bench, and every morning I check that it still holds its shape.
