Dotwork mandala on forearm with pocket watch
Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large circular mandala fills the forearm, built from fine dots and radiating geometric petals with a teal centre and teal highlights on some sections. Above it on the upper arm sit a line-drawn pocket watch and small teal flowers. The black ink dominates, with the teal accents adding colour against smooth skin and a plain white textured wall behind.

Dad's watch had run four minutes fast since the winter the cage jammed, and nobody in Heskett Row would let him set it right. He wound it every night at the kitchen table, thumb rough from coal dust that never fully washed out, and said the extra minutes gave him a head start on the day.

Then the pit closed and the head start had nowhere to go. I took the watch over with his old tin of pen nibs, because the lace rosettes on the chapel ceiling had been bothering me since I was nine. Every dot in them was a pinprick. I counted them on Sunday afternoons while the brass band practised badly through the wall, and I drew them out again on greaseproof paper until the petals became a clock face of their own, sixteen points, each one opening onto the next.
Mam said I was wasting good paper. The men on the rows laughed at me, then came round to look. Old Tommy Brough asked me to put a ring of forget-me-nots around the edge of his, the ones his wife grew along the back wall of the allotment, blue as the lamps used to be before they went electric.
The day the watch stopped, I was at the chapel with the greaseproof spread across my knees. It had never once stopped in my life. I held it to my ear and heard nothing, so I set it on the windowsill where the sun came through the glass and dropped a small wheel of colour onto the floorboards, sixteen points, each one a little late.
