Full moon tattoo on the forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed full moon fills a circle on the arm, with dark patches representing maria and lighter stippled areas for the surface. The shading is built from fine dots and soft grey tones, giving the moon a textured, three-dimensional look. The circle sits centrally against plain pale skin, with a dark sleeve and a blurred light background at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the kingdom of Lessary the moon went down the well at Hollin Cross in the autumn of the great frost, and for nine nights the valley had no light but tallow and lamp oil. The reeve sent men with ropes. The men came back with rope burns and nothing else. It was Ada Corran, the baker's youngest, who said she would go, because she owned a lamp that would not blow out and because nobody had thought to forbid her.

She climbed down the mossed stones with the lamp on a cord round her neck. At the bottom the water was black and still, and the moon lay on it like a coin on a tablecloth, pale and pitted, its dark seas lying flat where the old kings used to say the sea-wives bathed. Its face was scattered with tiny hollows, like frost on a windowpane, and when Ada leaned close she saw that each one was a small mouth that had once been open to the sky.

"You are shaking the water," said the moon. "Stop that, and fetch me up." Ada said she could not lift something so large. The moon laughed, which sounded like gravel tipped into a bucket, and said she need only take what she required. So Ada pressed her thumb into the cold grey of the face and came away with a pinch of light no bigger than a lentil. She cupped it in her palm and began to climb.

When she reached the lip of the well, the valley was dark to its edges, and she opened her hand over the stones. The little light rose out of her palm, found its way up into the sky, and the whole moon followed it, drawing itself up the rope of the dark like a fish on a line. The people of Lessary still say the moon carries a thumbprint on its face. Nobody has ever managed to tell them they are wrong.
