Moon on upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, round full moon is tattooed on the inner upper arm, with its surface shown in fine grey stippling and a few darker crater shapes. A thin dark outline defines the edge of the moon. The pale skin and soft lighting keep the tattoo as the clear focus against a plain background.

The ewes were lambing in the top field when Dad hauled the paraffin lamp off its hook and told me to fetch the bucket. Frost had turned the yard to glass. Above the barn the moon sat fat and low over the hedge, so bright I could read the feed label by it, and Dad stopped in the gateway just to look up, which he never did.

"Your gran used to say those dark bits were the moon's freckles," he said. "Reckoned she could tell the weather by which one was showing." I asked which one was showing tonight. He pointed with the bucket handle at a grey smudge near the bottom edge, shaped like a thumbprint pressed into butter. "That one means rain by Thursday," he said, and walked on before I could argue.
The third ewe came backwards and took the two of us an hour. Two lambs came out slick and steaming, and the third didn't breathe, so Dad rubbed it with straw while I counted under my breath against the lamp. When the little ram finally coughed, the moon had slid behind the barn roof, and we stood in the dark with our hands red and useless.
Thursday came grey and wet, just as he'd promised. He never said he'd been right. He just wrote a pencil tick on the calendar beside the freckle I'd drawn on the back of a feed receipt, and I kept that receipt folded in my coat pocket for years, the way you keep a thing that turned out true.
