Dotwork triangle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small triangle, shaded from solid edges into a scatter of fine dots, sits on the outer forearm. The shading builds density toward one corner, giving a sense of fading or movement. The ink is dark grey to black on pale skin, with the arm cropped against a plain wall and grey knit clothing.

Brother, the wind has taken the second wagon's tally, so I have had to reckon the road again from memory, which you know I hate. Still, the marker is finished. Ansel cut the triangle into the lintel stone at the cistern yesterday, point facing south-east, the way the caravans go when the salt flats turn white. He wanted the solid edge on the side where the sun rises, and I said the dark should sit where the water is, not the light. We argued until the lamp burned down.

The stonecutter's method is slow. He chose a bronze point and tapped one dot, then another, letting each sit a finger's width from the last. The edges he left whole, because a drawn line would crack in this stone. Toward the corner the dots crowd together until the triangle is more shadow than shape. Ansel says a man walking toward that corner will feel the ground go soft and believe he is nearer to something than he is. I think he is only tired. But the drivers who passed this morning stopped to touch it, and one of the boys asked whether the arrow would move on its own.

Harun used to say the dots are what remains when a line has been walked too often. I did not understand him then. I think I do now, watching the dust settle over the freshest marks. By the next full moon the wind will have worn the corner smooth, and whoever comes after will have to decide where the point was meant to go.

Send the mule-driver's coin with the next courier, and tell Mother the cistern is holding. I will walk the line south when the heat breaks. Your brother, Eshan.
