Small airplane tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of an aeroplane, seen from above, sits on the upper forearm. The shape is a simple silhouette with slightly rough, uneven edges and solid black ink. The plain pale skin and grey vest top leave the tattoo as the clear focus of the frame.

Dear Danny,

The Dakota came in low over the saltpan this morning, so low that the dust off its wheels reached the fence before the engine did. Mr Okafor says it's the last scheduled run before the road washes out, and he's stuck the mail in a biscuit tin with the spare rotors. I told him you'd want the news before the tin does.

You'll laugh, but the old wind sock has finally given up. It hangs off the pole like a wet sock on a line. I climbed up yesterday with the ladder you left behind and tied a fresh one from a pillowcase. Mum would have had something to say about that, but the pillowcase was ruined anyway after the dust storm.

The reason I'm writing is the road. The council man drove out to say the highway past the bore will be sealed by spring, and they want to take the strip off the map. I told him the planes don't read maps, they read the ground, and the ground here has been flat for a million years. He didn't argue. He just took a photo of the dirt from above, which I gather is how they do things now.

Come home for Christmas if you can. Bring the drawings. I'll show you the bit of runway where we used to chalk the names of the planes we'd never board.

Love, Nell
