The photo shows a close crop of a person's lower abdomen and hip, with a hand resting on the front pocket of grey denim jeans. A dragonfly is tattooed on the skin above the waistband, with translucent, softly shaded wings spread out and a slender body running diagonally. The tattoo is rendered in grey and black tones on a plain white background, with the white top cropped at the upper edge.

Tamsin had been blowing glass in the back shed of Pell's Yard since the spring the Wenlow flooded, and by August her hands had learned to turn the rod slowly enough that the molten gather never sagged. Old Ansel Pell swore the dragonflies over the millpond were the only things in the valley that could outwait him. He had set a commission on the bench: a dragonfly for the vicar's widow, who wanted something that would not die on the windowsill the way her last one had.

The wings were the difficulty. Tamsin drew the glass into sheets thin enough to read the kitchen clock through, then pinched each vein with tweezers wet from the bucket. She worked through the afternoon while the light crept across the bench. When the last wing cooled, it caught the sun and threw a small green tremor onto the whitewash, and she felt something close to grief, because it was finished and no longer hers to hold.
The widow came on a Thursday with a shoebox lined in cotton wool. She studied the dragonfly for a long time, then asked Tamsin to hold it up to the window. Tamsin did. The widow said her husband had counted dragonflies on the mill race every evening for forty years, and she would like the thing put back where it belonged, on the water, where the wind could take its wings. Tamsin thought it was a joke until she saw the widow's face.
So they walked down to the millpond at dusk, and Tamsin set the hollow glass body on the surface, where it floated on its own small pool of reflected sky. The current drew it slowly toward the sluice. Tamsin watched the two green wings flicker over the dark water until the last of the light went out of them, and she was surprised to find she had stopped wanting it back.
