Infinity anchor with love and life script on thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black fine line tattoo of an anchor sits beneath an infinity symbol, with the script words love and life written along the two loops. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is set against plain skin. A hand wearing a silver ring holds the edge of a dark skirt above the tattoo, which sits in the lower left of the frame.

The chandlery on Humber Street smelled of tar and wet hemp, and Nell Garrity had been splicing since four when the bell over the door rang and Tom Eckersley came in dripping, a pencil stub behind his ear and a drawing folded in his fist. "Ten minutes, that's all I want," he said. "The anchor, the loop, and the words where they belong."

She flattened the sheet under the lamp. He had drawn the anchor standing alone, its shank a plain bar, and above it a figure eight lying on its side, the loops leaning as easily as a rope run through a block a hundred times. "Love on the top loop," he said, "life on the bottom. Her name's not going on there, so don't ask." Nell didn't ask. She had buried two husbands' worth of sailors' secrets under that counter and knew which ones were worth keeping.

She traced the loop with her thumb. The tail of the eight ran off the edge of the paper, and that was how she knew he had drawn it right. A knot that ends is only a knot. A loop goes on. She warned him the lines would blur if he sat still, and he laughed and said he had sat still through three winters off Iceland.

The Rosalind went out on the morning ebb. Nell watched the sails go grey against the Humber until nothing was left but the smoke of the tug. In March the ship came home, and Tom walked up the quay with his cap in his hand, the anchor sitting plain and dark where it always would, the loop running on past the edge of him the way she had drawn it.
