Dreamcatcher and feathers on a foot

Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a circular web and three shaded feathers sits on the top of the foot, with a thin decorative line wrapping around the ankle. The linework is fine and black, with grey shading on the feathers and soft tonal detail in the web. The bare foot is photographed on a tiled floor with painted dark toenails, and the design fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The web had come loose from its hoop somewhere south of Madeira, and Oona spent the second dog watch picking knots out of it by lamplight while the cook swore at the galley stove. The ring was willow bent into a circle, wrapped in sinew, and it had come to her in a tin tobacco box with a note in her gran's cramped hand: hang it where the bad dreams come in. Nobody aboard the Marigold Rose believed in such things. Nobody aboard had been asked to.

Three feathers hung from the bottom of the ring, grey at the quills and darker towards the tips, and the bosun said they looked like something a heron had dropped in a fit. Oona didn't argue. She had traded a bag of sewing thread in Lisbon for them, from a boy who swore they were gull, and she had never been sure which of them had been cheated. When the squall came up off the Bay of Biscay that week, she sat in the forepeak with the net across her knees and tied the last knot while the hull groaned around her like an old door.

By morning the sea had gone flat and pewter-coloured, and the web was still whole, though one feather had torn loose and was stuck to the rail with salt. Tibbs came up the ladder rubbing his eyes and asked, quite seriously, whether he could have it. Oona looked at the ring, then at the big scarred hand held out to her, and realised she had not slept a full hour since Portsmouth.

She gave him the feather. At Falmouth she nailed the hoop above the bunk she shared with no one, its open centre turned toward the door, and left the lamp unlit so the light from the harbour could find its way through.
