Turtle tattoo on the top of a foot

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black turtle is tattooed on the top of a bare foot, seen from above with the toes in the lower right of the frame. The shell is filled with a dense pattern of dots and curved lines around a central spiral, and the head and flippers use bold, tapering black shapes. The ink is entirely black on pale skin, and the plain white background keeps attention on the design.

Right, settle down, the band's taking a breath and I've got the floor till they're back. You lot want the one about the turtle, do you? My nan told it me in this same hall, when it still had the sprung boards and the smell of hair oil and wet coats.

There was a girl called Mary Ellen Tully, who worked the cloakroom and could hum any tune after one hearing. Every night the sea came up under the promenade and every night a green turtle lifted its head out of the surf by the pier steps, looking up at the lit windows as if it were waiting to be asked in. Nobody believed it. Then the storm of '53 pulled the sea wall apart and the turtle came up the slipway and stopped at the cloakroom door with a spiral cut into its shell, round and round like the grooves on a 78.

Mary Ellen knew that spiral. Her father had scratched the very same into the brass rail of his boat, the boat that never came back. She got down on her knees on the wet lino and traced it with one finger, and the turtle closed its eyes and started to hum.

So they danced, the whole hall, the old men and the widows and the boys from the docks, and the turtle swayed in the middle of the floor until the sea went out again. Mary Ellen kept that tune in her head for the rest of her life. Some say that's why the spiral goes round and round: it's still waiting for the band to finish.
