Two roses on the top of a foot

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot with a black and grey tattoo of two layered roses, shown from the outer side with the toes visible. The roses use fine outlines and soft grey shading to create depth in the petals, with leaves framing the design beneath them. The wooden floor and rolled denim cuff sit behind the foot, and the image is shot in warm indoor light.

They had two roses in a jam jar on the galley table, cut from a hedge at the last lock. The petals had gone papery and dark at the edges, the way old roses do when they have decided to stop pretending. Ida kept meaning to press them. This year she waved, and the woman waved back with a clothes peg in her teeth, and Ida thought that might be the most honest thing anybody had said to her since February.

When they tied up below the bridge that evening, Tom finally got the rope right. He stood back, pleased with himself, and Ida took the jar from the table and tipped the dead roses over the side. They spread on the brown water and turned slowly toward the weir, and neither of them said a word about it.
