Dreamcatcher and feathers with the word Dream
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher hangs above two long feathers, with the word Dream written in a flowing script beside it and a scatter of small birds rising from the lower feathers. The dreamcatcher web and feather barbs are drawn in fine lines with soft grey shading that gives the feathers depth. The composition runs diagonally down the skin, with the lettering and birds balancing the open space on the left.

Pell had been kneading since the chapel bell gave up on three, and the dough under her palms had gone from sullen to elastic, which was the only honest sign she knew that morning was coming. Her mother had kept the ovens on Hallow Lane for forty years and never once trusted the clock on the wall. She trusted the birds.

The trouble hung above the back door: an old ring of willow wrapped in thread, its web gone brown with flour dust. Her mother had put it there to catch the night's bad dreams before they drifted down the stairs and settled into the proving drawers. Nobody had ever asked where the caught dreams went. Pell could see them now, dark as currants, pressed into the cross-strings, and the two grey feathers hanging beneath were heavy with them.
She took the feathers down while the lane was still blue. The first sparrows came off the roof gutters in a rush, then starlings, then a scatter of small birds she had no name for, and they rose from the feathers the way steam rises from a cooling crust. Each one lifted a dream in its beak and carried it up over the slate roofs toward the sea.
By the time the sun found the sill, Pell had shaped the first loaf of the day into a bird with its wings folded tight. She set it on the rack beside the window, where the crumb was still breathing, and the last small bird circled once above the chimney before it went.
