Dreamcatcher with feathers and birds on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a fine woven web sits above two shaded feathers that hang from its base. Small birds scatter from the lower left, and the word Dream is written in a flowing script to the right of the hoop. The work is in black ink and grey tones on pale skin, photographed straight on against a metallic background.

The last crow on Halvard Ring died in the third week of the dimming, and by the next shift the children had stopped asking what birds were for and started asking why I kept old netting in the drawer under my bunk. I told them it was a dreamcatcher. Nobody on the ring had slept under one, but the word had survived the way words do, carried in the mouths of people who had never seen what it meant.

My grandmother had hung one above a window in a city that no longer had windows that opened. She said the web caught the bad dreams and let the good ones slip through the middle to find the sleeper. I didn't believe her, and I still don't, but I believed her hands. They were quick and sure, tying knots that no machine on the ring had ever bothered to learn.
The feathers were the hard part. Synthetic fibre would hold a shape but not a sway, and the air recyclers pulled everything toward the vents. So I used the real ones, eleven grey pinions from a moulted pigeon that had wandered into the hydroponics bay before the seal closed. I kept them for twenty years in a tin marked with my grandmother's name, waiting for a reason.
The reason came on the morning the ring finally docked with the long hauler and the outer hatch opened onto a sky full of actual weather. A flock lifted off the far ridge and scattered like thrown ash. The children ran to the glass. I hung the netting from the vent grille, wrote DREAM on the bulkhead in marker the way she had once written it on her cupboard door, and let the wind find the feathers. Somewhere down there, something that remembered flying was going to wake up a little lighter.
