The hoop was willow, cut from the bank by the beck the summer my father stopped speaking to the Hendersons, and it had hung from the hook above the Aga for longer than I had been alive. Nobody in our house knew who had wound the web across it. Mam said her gran did it. Mam's sister said a lodger with a bad chest did it, then left owing rent in 1961 and never sent a letter.

This January the frost came on the twenty-second and stayed. The pipes in the parlour split. I slept three nights in the tack room beside the paraffin heater, and on the third morning I found the hoop on the flags by the feed bin, the two pheasant feathers still tied on with gut, and a ring of starlings sitting on the gatepost as if they had been waiting for someone to come out.

I counted them. Eleven. When I lifted the latch they went up all at once, not the way starlings usually do, but in a loose line that tipped over the top field towards the wood and thinned out like smoke from a bonfire. I stood there with the feathers in my glove until my fingers stopped feeling like mine.

I hung the hoop back over the Aga that evening. The web had slackened, and I could see daylight through the middle of it. Mam asked where I had been all afternoon. I told her the birds had gone looking for somewhere warmer, and for once she didn't argue.
