Dreamcatcher and feathers on a wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a fine ring and web sits above two long feathers that are shaded in soft grey tones, with a small flock of birds drifting off to the left. The cursive word Dream runs beside the ring in bold black script. The design is shown in black ink and greys on a pale forearm against a dark, reflective background.

Walter came into the Cresswell Ballroom on the last Saturday of October with a carrier bag of grey feathers and a wire hoop wound with cotton, and asked Mrs Pell at the cloakroom whether she had any use for either. She sent him up to me, because I kept the lost property shelf and because I had said the week before that my dreams were nothing but the sound of the floor being mopped at dawn. He had made the catcher himself, he said, from a bent willow ring off the allotments and sinew from an old belt, and he wanted it hung where somebody would look up. I told him the ceiling over the bandstand had a crack shaped like a wing. He said that would do.

So at the close of the evening, when the band struck up the last waltz and the couples turned slow under the glass lamps, I stood on the bandstand steps and watched the feathers swing from the ring. Walter danced with Mrs Pell, who was seventy-one and did not need leading. Then he came to me, bowed like a bank clerk, and said the web only caught the dreams you had finished with, so I was not to worry about the ones I was still carrying.
Outside, the wind took the side door and a skein of starlings lifted off the pier rail, black as spilt ink, and scattered over the bay. I kept one feather from the bag and pinned it inside my coat, where the lining was torn.
In the morning the hoop was still turning above the stage, and I did not have to ask whether anything had caught in it.
