Dreamcatcher, feathers and script on the wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher hangs from two shaded feathers, with a small flock of birds flying away from the lower left. The word Dream is written in a flowing script to the right of the dreamcatcher. The tattoo is in black and grey, with fine webbing and soft grey shading on the feathers, photographed on the underside of the wrist against a metallic background.

The lodger in number seven had been stringing feathers since the week the herring boats came back empty, and Mrs Harriet Pell had stopped asking him to stop. He worked at the kitchen table after breakfast, bending a cooper's hoop into a ring with his big cracked thumbs, then lacing it with grey cotton until the web held the morning light like a net left out to dry. Two gull feathers went beneath it, one for each guest who had gone home without paying his shilling, he said, and she did not ask him which guests he meant.

He blackened the quills' edges with soot from the range and hung the thing in the front window, where the glass ran with salt and the sea came in grey over the wall. Harriet dusted around it. Gulls landed on the step and left again, and the chalkboard by the door still read Vacancies in her own hand, though nobody had climbed the path since Whitsun. On the third night of the gale the lodger was gone, his boots gone too, and the window stood open with the catcher turning slowly on its cord.
She found him on the sea wall at first light, or thought she did: a figure of wire and wind in a sodden coat. Then the birds came up off the mudflats, a loose flock of them, dark as thrown pepper, and they rose past the chimney pots and scattered toward the open water as if someone had finally let them go. Harriet stood with a wet blanket in her arms until they were specks. When she went back inside she took up the chalk and, beneath Vacancies, wrote Dream in letters that ran off the edge of the board, and left the door on the latch.
