Dreamcatcher drawing with four feathers
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink pen drawing of a dreamcatcher with a looped flower mandala inside a hatched ring, decorated with small loops around its edge. Four beaded strings hang below, each ending in a hatched feather, and the words DREAM CATCHER are written above in capitals. The linework is outlined rather than shaded, and the drawing sits centrally on a teal background.

The third feather had come unravelled again, so Nan sat on the caravan step with the last of the sinew and a mouthful of pins, muttering that nothing sold in Penzance was made to last. Gull, the youngest, watched from the grass with his chin on his knees. Behind them the sea went on being the sea, grey as a tin tray.

She had strung the thing from a hoop of willow she cut from the hedge behind the chapel car park. Inside it she wove a flower, a ring of loops that she swore was a daisy and Gull swore was a clock. Round the rim she tied little knots like a row of hooks, so the bad dreams would snag on them and drop into the grass. Four beaded strings hung down, one for each of them, and each ended in a feather she had cut from the stripe of a dead heron her neighbour found on the road to St Just.
"Does it catch the nightmares or only the wasps?" Gull asked.
"Both," she said. "Wasps are nightmares with better manners." She pulled the thread tight and tied it off with the knot her own mother had taught her, the one that slides when you want it to and holds when you need it to. Then she handed the hoop up to the caravan window, where Gull's sister was leaning out with a torch she did not need in daylight.
That night the wind came off the bay and rattled the beads against the tin roof. Gull lay awake listening to them knock like someone wanting in, and then, because he was seven and proud, he decided it was the feathers doing their job.
