Dreamcatcher heart and feather on a foot

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A heart-shaped dreamcatcher sits on the top of the foot, with a second smaller heart-shaped dreamcatcher overlapping it. Below, a shaded feather is joined to the design by looping outlines. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading on the feather and web pattern, and the image is composed centrally on the foot.

Dear Nell, the wind came off the bay again last night and took two of the good sheets off the line at Mrs Pardoe's, so you can imagine how my morning has gone. The new lodger in number six arrived on Monday with one carpet bag and a flat box of feathers, which I did not expect, and asked whether his room faced the sea. I told him it faced the chapel, which it does, and he laughed and said that would do.

He spends his evenings at the window bending willow he cut on the cliff path into small heart-shaped hoops, then webbing them with grey wool so tight you could float a sixpence on one. He says his grandmother taught him the trick. A net hung over the bed catches the bad dreams in its knots, and the good ones pass straight through the middle. He ties his feathers on with waxed cord, gull and jay and one dark thing he won't name, and hangs them to dry over the washstand so the whole room smells of the sea and of glue.

Last Tuesday the fog came in thick off the water and he didn't come down to supper. I took his tea up and found him at the sill, two hoops laid one over the other on the glass, a feather swinging from a loop of thread just clear of the frame. He said the fog would lift by morning, and it did. He was gone on the early coach with his bag, the bed made up tight, and two hoops still hanging from the curtain rail.

I haven't taken them down. When the door opens the feather turns slowly on its cord, as if someone has just come in, and I find I don't have the heart to move it. Come in August and see for yourself, though I'd rather you left it be. Your loving sister, Win.
