Dreamcatcher with flowers on the hip
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a braided outer ring, a spider-web net and beaded strands hangs beneath a cluster of red and blue flowers at the top. Two feathers and a central ornate pendant hang from the bottom, with ribbons tied among the beads. The linework is dark and fine, with soft shading on the feathers and a pale, open background in the net, and the design sits diagonally across the side of the body.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Every winter the night train from Carrowmere came in with its lamps turned low, and every winter old Tilly Brack stood on the platform with a willow hoop in her hands, waiting for the dreams to come off it. She had bound the hoop herself in braided hemp and strung it with a web of thread so fine the lamplight passed through it. Blue and rust beads hung from the bottom. Her husband had been a signalman who nodded off in his box one night and never woke, so she had taken to the platform instead, where the sleepers stepped down stiff from their berths and left their dreams behind them like coats on hooks.

Most dreams slipped through the web and went up into the rafters with the pigeons. But one night a boy got down with his whole dream still on him, a dream of a sea he had never seen, and it caught in the feathers that hung beneath the net and would not go. Tilly lifted it out in her two hands, the way you lift a moth, and carried it home to the back room where she kept the stove lit.
The boy came back in spring, asking after the sea. Tilly had kept it in a jam jar on the sill, a grey-blue shine that tipped and settled whenever the kettle sang. She gave it to him, and he thanked her and asked what she wanted for her trouble. She pointed at the hoop. Leave me the next one that catches, she said, and he did, and she hung it with the others.
