Drink me bottle and eat me cookie on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A bottle with a cork stopper and a pink liquid holds a banner reading DRINK ME, and below it sits a round biscuit with a heart outline reading EAT ME. A red rose with green leaves sits at the top edge of the frame. Bold black outlines define the forms, with flat pink, red, grey and green fills and soft grey shading on the skin beneath.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Aunt Maud's shop smelled of rose water and burnt sugar, and on the first wet Monday after the funeral I found the stamp box under the counter. Two tin stamps, worn smooth. One said DRINK ME, the other EAT ME, and beside them sat a pad of pink ink gone thick as jam.

I had assumed they were a joke, the sort of thing a woman in her seventies keeps to amuse herself. Then Mrs Okafor came in for her usual rock buns and asked, quite seriously, for "the bottle with the heart on it". She had a bad hip and a son in Leeds who had stopped ringing. I reached under the counter without thinking, found a small stoppered flask of rose cordial with its label already inked, and gave it to her with a biscuit wrapped in waxed paper.

She didn't drink it in the shop. She sat by the window and read the card Maud had tucked under the cork, laughed, cried a little, then bought two more of everything. When she left I opened the card myself. It said only: Go slowly, and then choose.

That was the trick of it. Maud had never sold a potion. She had sold a pause, something sweet to eat or sip with the lights on, and a reason for a stranger to sit down. I pressed the next biscuit myself, careful so the heart came out crisp, and set the flask on the shelf where the morning sun would catch its pink.
