Message in a bottle with roses

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A corked glass bottle holds a rolled tan scroll with a red heart on it, set against a pale blue-grey glass body. Two red roses with dark green leaves sit on either side of the bottle, with bold black outlines and flat, solid fills. The design is in full colour and is centred on a smooth patch of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bottle came in on the morning tide, wedged between a lobster buoy and a split oar, and Maud Tregear fished it out with the boathook before her brother could claim it for the scrap man. The glass was thick and greenish at the base. Inside, a roll of tan paper leaned against the curve of the bottle, and a red heart had been drawn on its face with a steady hand.

She carried it up the slipway without looking at the water, a habit her mother had taught her when she was small. At the harbour office Mr Pascoe turned the cork over in his fingers and squinted at the glass. "Mary Jane, I'd say," he said. "Her skipper threw a bottle over every time the boys went courting in Penzance. Forty years back, maybe more." He unrolled the paper with two careful thumbs. The ink had faded to a pale brown ghost, but the last line was clear enough: Tell Ada the herring are running and I'll be home by Sunday.

Ada Penrose lived above the chandlery, behind a window full of geraniums that had outlasted three owners of the shop. She was ninety-one and had sold fish on the quay since before the war. When Maud read her the line, Ada said nothing for a long while, then laughed so hard she had to hold on to the sill. "He never once came home on a Sunday," she said. "But he always came home in the end."

Ada asked her to leave the bottle. Maud rolled the paper back into its neck, pressed the cork home with her thumb, and set it among the geraniums where the sun could reach the red heart.
