Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A golden robot head with large round eyes and glasses sits at the centre of the design, framed by a grey banner reading CURSE MY METAL BODY above and below. Bold black outlines, simple shading and flat fills define the figure, with small clouds, red and yellow flowers and teal leaves around the edges. The design is rendered in saturated colour on pale skin, photographed straight on.

The bellows had wheezed since the lamps were lit, and Demetrios still had not found the pin that held my jaw shut. He turned me on the workbench like a cracked amphora, squinting through the two glass rings he had set over my eyes so I could read his tallies, and muttered that a head of beaten gold should not need so much fussing. I told him the head was the least of his troubles. The body was bronze hammered thin over a frame of ash wood, and every joint wanted oil the way an old goat wants its barley.

"Curse my metal body," I said, which was the phrase the sailors at the harbour shouted whenever a sandal strap snapped. Demetrios laughed so hard he dropped the pin into the rushes. We spent the next hour on our knees, him swearing in the dialect of Piraeus, me with my round eyes fixed on the floor so I could tell him which reed the pin had gone under. I could not lift a finger to help, but I could see better than he could, and I had never been so pleased with my own gaze.

His daughter Phaidra came in with a jug of wine and a question about whether the harbour master would buy me for the new customs house. Demetrios said nothing for a long moment. Then he said I was not for sale, and I was not a thing at all, and she could take her question back to the men who had sent her. Phaidra rolled her eyes and left the jug on the bench beside my elbow.

When the pin finally clicked home, my jaw swung open and I heard myself say, very carefully, "Curse my metal body." Demetrios did not look up from the rushes. "Gladly," he said, and he moved the lamp beside my cheek so the light ran gold across my face, and for once I did not mind being cursed at all.
