Eagle and roses flash design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A coloured drawing of an eagle swooping downwards, with its head and yellow beak in the lower centre and its wings spread out to either side. Three red roses and several rosebuds with green leaves surround the bird. Bold black outlines, dark wing feathers and red and green fills give it a classic traditional look, set against an off-white background.

The eagle came down over the south cliffs of Inish Rath the spring the supply boat stopped calling, and by midsummer the crofters had agreed that it had to be stopped. Old Brenna Coll, who kept the only walled garden on the island, said nobody should shoot a bird that had flown in over open water to find them. She went up the sheep path alone with a basket of red roses cut from her wall and a handful of thorns.

She laid the roses on the flat rock where the bird roosted, one for every month the island had gone without a boat, and sat down beside them to wait. The eagle came at dusk with its wings spread wide over the heather, and it saw the petals and the stripped stems. It folded its wings and looked at her a long while with its yellow eye. Brenna told it plainly that the lambs were not its own, and that the roses were the only thing she had left to trade.
The eagle took one rose in its beak and flew out over the sound. Next morning the boat's horn sounded in the bay, three long notes, and the crofters ran down to the pier with their arms full of nothing but hope. No one saw the bird again that year, though Brenna swore its shadow crossed her garden wall at noon and a single rosebud dropped at her feet.
Her grandchildren still cut a rose for that rock each spring. The eagle has never once come down on a lamb since, and the boat has never once missed its day.
