Peony and buds tattoo design drawing
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a full peony bloom in the centre with two closed buds to the left, all rendered in fine stippled or hatched linework. The petals shift from deep purple to soft pink and pale yellow-cream at the edges, with shading that gives the flower depth. A rougher red outline sketch of another peony sits at the top of the frame on a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Your grandfather planted that peony the spring the glasshouse roof came down in the gale, and he swore it would never flower for a living soul until the boy came home from the sea. So we all left the buds alone. Three springs they sat on the stem like little fists, plum at the knuckle and pale at the tip, and every April the vicar asked after them and Ada from the shop asked after them, and I told both of them the same thing, that they were resting.

The boy came home in the wet week of October, thinner than the frost and smelling of diesel. He walked straight past the kitchen door and out to the wall, stood among the dead dahlias, and cried like a child, which is how I knew the peony had been right to wait. Grandfather never did say what it was waiting for. He only said a flower opens when the ground is ready to be looked at.
We cut one bloom that Sunday, the biggest, its petals folded over each other like the pages of a letter nobody wanted to finish. The colour ran from plum at the heart to rose at the edge, then a faint cream where the light caught it, as if someone had drawn it in pencil and coloured it in out of love. The boy set it in a jam jar on the windowsill. The other buds stayed shut.
They are still shut, if you want to see them. Left-hand side of the bed, one just beginning to show a crease of pink. I keep meaning to tell him that's the next one, but he is hardly a man who listens to being told things, and anyway I think he knows.
