You learn the galley of the Maud Ellery by its noises before its shape: the tick of the cooling range, the clank of the pan rack when the swell turns, the hiss of the fryer when Osei swears in two languages. Nobody aboard has been to Paris except Teodor, the second engineer, who once spent a wet week in a hotel near the Seine and talks about it as though it were a woman who wronged him.

On the night of the Channel crossing you are scraping burnt sugar off the bottom of the big pan when the lights dip and the ship lurches, and the cutlery drawer shoots out across the deck. Among the spoons you find a stencil cut from an oil drum lid, a tower no taller than your hand, its legs splayed, its lattice punched through with a nail. Someone made it long ago and then forgot it, or meant to.
You tape it to the bulkhead above the range and dust it with flour, the way Teodor says a painter once did on a bridge. By morning the cook on watch has wiped it away and says the galley is for food, not postcards. You tell him it is a map, and he laughs, because he has never seen a map that stands up by itself.
On the last night of the voyage, when the coast of Kent comes up grey and flat, you find the stencil back in the drawer, tucked under the tea towels, with a fresh dusting of flour on it and a note in careful pencil: Keep it. Keep the tower where it is.
