Eiffel Tower on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small Eiffel Tower is tattooed on the side of a bare torso, with the tip pointing upwards and the base near the lower ribs. The tower is drawn in black linework with fine cross-hatched lattice detail on the legs and arch. The ink is solid black with no colour, set against soft, even skin tones and a plain grid-patterned background.

You have held the sketchbook on your knee since Lille, and by the time the train slows toward the tunnel at Coquelles the corners have gone soft from your thumb. The officer in the booth barely glances at your passport. He looks instead at the open page, where a tower stands in fine black ink, its legs cross-hatched so densely they seem to breathe.

"Who taught you lattice?" he asks, in English worn smooth by years of night shifts. You tell him nobody taught you, that you copied the bridge at Vitré from a postcard and got the arch wrong three times before it sat right. He tilts the book towards the strip light. Behind him a monitor shows a queue of lorries crawling in from Dunkirk, and somewhere under the counter a dog barks once and gives up.
He says his father riveted girders in Levallois in the sixties, and that the old crews could tell a bolt was sound from the note a hammer made. "Every rivet, a small promise," he says, as if he has said it to himself many times before. He does not stamp your passport. He tears a blank label from the roll, writes the number of your carriage on it in careful capitals, and presses it flat over the tip of the tower.
"Now you are through," he says. You board with the sketchbook under your arm and the label still tacky against the paper, and you watch the tunnel swallow the last of the daylight, the little tower riding with you into the dark.
