The blue hen that came home first from Doncaster that May had a torn primary and a face like a disappointed schoolteacher. When Edie eased the ring from her leg she found a curl of tissue paper tucked beneath it, and on it, in Edie's careful copperplate, were the words she had been too frightened to say across the kitchen table. The telephone sat in the hall where their mother could hear every word, so Edie had sent her confession by air instead, three weeks of birds going out empty and coming back quiet.

Underneath her own line, someone had pressed a second one into the paper so hard it nearly tore. June's loops leaned forward as if running for a train. It said only: so do I, and be quick about it, the post goes at six.

Edie folded the note small and held it while the hen shook out her wings on the sill. Across the yard the back gate was still bolted, but June was already crossing the cinders with her coat unbuttoned, and the whole loft had gone loud with wings.
