Small music note on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single black musical eighth note sits on the side of a finger. The linework is thin and even, with a solid note head and a curved flag, and the ink is a soft, slightly faded black. The background is an out of focus cream lace or crochet cloth with a dark blue object, and the warm, muted tones keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Hild,

The bell at Saint Oswin's has cracked again, so the hours are kept by the sacristan's cough and the cold in our fingers. Mother Perpetua has put me to mending the altar lace, which has gone yellow with a hundred winters, and I spend my mornings bent over it with a needle so fine I have to hold my breath to thread it.
Last week, inside the cover of the old gradual, I found a small mark in brown ink that Brother Wulfric must have made before his eyes failed him. It was a single note, a dark head with a flag curling off the stem like the top of a shepherd's crook. He had written nothing beside it. I have no idea what it was meant to sound like, only that it looked pleased with itself, and I have been humming it under my breath at the sink ever since.
Yesterday I stitched it into the border of the cloth in blue thread saved from the old vestments. I did it badly. The head is too heavy and the flag leans, but it sits among the lace roses like a bird that has landed by mistake. I expected Mother Perpetua to unpick it, and I had my apology ready. Instead she stood over the frame for a long time, then hummed the note back to me, a little flat, and went off to Vespers without a word.
This morning there were two more notes in the border, neater than mine, and the blue thread was new. I have not asked who made them. The chant book is still on my table, and the ink has faded to the colour of weak tea, but the note in the margin is still there, waiting for someone to sing it.
Love, Agnes
