Outline cat tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a small, single-line outline of a sitting cat tattooed on the skin of the neck, just behind and below the ear. The linework is thin and dark black with no shading, and the tattoo sits against pale skin. A sparkling stud earring and auburn hair frame the top and right of the composition.

The rain had been at Saltergate market since Tuesday, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would lift. Old Mother Pell kept her eel stall under a tarpaulin that sagged like a wet sail, and on its corner sat the grey cat nobody had ever seen move.

People said the cat belonged to nobody, which was the same as saying it belonged to the rain. When a shower came down, the drops ran off every hair of it except along one thin line where it sat, as if someone had drawn round it with a dry pencil. Children tried to touch it. They came away with clean fingers and a feeling of having been looked at.
One October, a girl called Nessa Coyle came to the market with a cart of cracked crockery and no money. She was cold to the bone, and when she sat down by the cat to wait out the weather, it leaned into her shoulder and the rain stopped falling on her. Mother Pell saw it and said nothing for a long while. Then she handed Nessa the stall and the cat with it, and went north to live with her sister in Hull.
Nessa ran the stall for forty years. Each morning she wiped the water off the tarpaulin, and each evening the cat's outline stayed dry on the wet stone, a clean sitting shape the rain would not touch. When she died they found it still there, and the market kept it marked with chalk for a century.
