Realistic eye tattoo across the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with a large realistic eye on the back, drawn with soft shading and fine lashes above the iris. The fingers are almost fully covered in dense black ink, with pale, textured bone-like detail on the middle finger. The image is in black and grey with a close crop, and a partly visible tattoo sits on the forearm above.

The ferryman of Lesk was never allowed to close his eyes on the river, so the Guild of Salt gave him an eye that could do the watching for him. Brother Anselm lost the use of two fingers to lamp-soot the first winter, and the Guild called the black ink on the rest a cosmetic cure for the blisters. Nobody in Ostrevane believed that, but nobody asked him about it either.

The eye was painted on the back of his hand by a woman from the cliff hermitages, who worked with a needle of sharpened elder and a paste of ash and mare's milk. She told him it would watch the water while he counted the dead crossing over, and that it would blink only when a name was spoken wrong. He laughed at her, then stopped laughing when the lashes on his hand seemed to lift toward the wake of every boat he touched.
On the night the Duchess's daughter came down to the landing wrapped in grey wool, the middle finger was the one that changed. It had gone pale and ridged, like a bone scraped clean by the river, and it pointed upstream at the bridge where the lanterns had stopped moving.
He did not say her name. He rowed her across, and at the far bank he watched the hand rather than the girl, and the eye did not blink once. That was how he knew the crossing was honest, and that he could still stop being a ferryman.
