Small fine line outline tattoo of an elephant with its trunk raised to a red filled heart, on the top of a foot near the toes.

Elephant holding a heart on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small elephant is drawn in a thin black outline on the top of a foot, with its trunk curling up towards a solid red heart. The linework is simple and unshaded, and the heart is the only area of colour. The foot sits in a glittery sandal, with the tattoo placed centrally in the frame near the toes.

Dear Bet, the fair pulled out of Clacton at dawn and I've been sat on the step of the water wagon ever since, writing this on the back of a spare ticket roll. Old Mabel finally let the ring boy lead her down the ramp without kicking, which the whole lot of us counted as a miracle. She's the youngest of the three elephants and still walks like she's apologising for being in the way.

The trouble started on Tuesday when the ribbon man's little girl let go of her balloon over the rail. It was red and shaped like a heart, and Mabel reached through the bars for it with her trunk as if that were the most natural thing in the world. Everyone froze. Then she curled the string round the tip of her trunk, held it high and walked the length of the pen with it bobbing above her like a lantern. The girl didn't cry once. She just laughed and told us Mabel was taking it home for her.

Mabel kept that balloon until it sagged on the Wednesday, and by then the girl had made the whole crowd promise to write her name on the tent pole. Tom from the generator says it's soppy. I say it's the only sensible thing anyone's done all season. We're off to Southend next, and I've tucked the rubber heart in my coat pocket, gone soft and wrinkled, so the girl can have it back when we come round in June.

Your loving sister, Nell. P.S. Tell Dad the caravan key is under the second brick, not the first. Mabel sends her regards, or she would if she could be bothered.
