The foot is shown at an angle against a blue-grey background, with the toes and a denim sleeve visible.

Dorota had repaired jigsaws at the back of the Berwick charity shop for eleven years, and she knew the sound a lost piece made when someone tipped a box over the counter and it failed to come out. Today the box held a thousand pieces of a lighthouse, and the man who had brought it in stood with his hands in his coat, watching the Tweed through the window as if it were a border he might still talk his way across.

She sorted by colour first, always. The sky went in one heap, the sea in another. Two pieces were missing from the lamp room, and she found herself turning over the question she turned over with every box: whether a gap was a loss or only a place where something had not yet been put back.
Near the bottom she found a red piece with a tab shaped like a question mark, and a blue one that fitted it so neatly she laughed out loud. The man looked round. She did not explain. She pressed the two together and held them up to the light, the seam barely visible, then set them on the counter like a coin.
He paid in notes he counted twice. At the door he asked whether the rest would come back, meaning the pieces or perhaps something larger, and she said that most things did, if you kept sorting them. Outside, a lorry queued toward the bridge, its brake lights pulsing red, then blue, then red again.
