Camel outline on a toe

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small single-line outline of a camel in profile sits on the top of a toe. The linework is thin and uniform with no shading, and the ink is dark grey to black. The toe and nail fill the lower part of the frame, with a carpeted surface behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The function room at the Crown in Wigston smells of carpet shampoo and warm sausage rolls, and you find Dean Pollard by the raffle table with his lanyard still round his neck, already halfway through explaining the camel to a woman who has clearly been waiting for someone else. You recognise the look on him. It is the same look he had in Year 9 geography, when Mr Hollis drew the Sahara on the board and the whole class sketched a camel on the back of their exercise books.

Dean's was the only one drawn in a single unbroken line. He had been told you could draw anything in one go if you never lifted the biro, and he took it as scripture. When Hollis said camels stored water in their humps, Dean put his hand up and said, 'It's fat, sir, everyone knows that,' and the entire class backed him, and all thirty of you got detention on a Thursday. Dean kept that book. He says he still has it. He says a lot of things.

Then Hollis himself shuffles in, older than anyone's memory of him, leaning on a stick with a rubber foot, and asks if anybody still has their work from that year. Dean looks at you across the room with the expression of a man who has been waiting thirty years for someone to ask the right question. You say you think your loft has a box. Two hours later you are back in the function room with a dusty exercise book, and Hollis turns the pages slowly until he reaches the camel. He runs one finger along the line without lifting it. 'Still one line, Dean,' he says, and Dean laughs so hard he has to sit down on the carpet.
