Cat heart, script word and whiskers on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a bare foot resting on a cream fleece blanket, with three black tattoos on the top of the foot and near the ankle. The largest motif is a cat outlined in a heart shape with two dot eyes, next to the word Cat in a flowing script. A small cat face with whiskers sits higher up, close to the ankle.

The grey cat came down the slipway the morning the Mary Ellen failed to round the point, and nobody on Pellow quay could say where she had come from. She had one white ear, a torn lip, and a way of sitting with her tail curled round her feet so the whole shape looked like a heart somebody had drawn in a hurry.

Old Tom Berrow fed her pilchard heads and she stayed. After that she rode the bows of whichever boat went out first, sitting upright with her whiskers pressed flat against the wind. The fishermen noticed that the boats she faced into always came home. The day she turned her back on the harbour and stared at the town instead, Jack Hosken kept his boat tied up, and the Gannet went out without him and came back at dusk with her crew cold but alive.
When the great storm came in the autumn, the boats were far out and the harbour lamp guttered. The cat walked to the end of the wall, sat down on the wet stone, and would not move. The men called her Mab and shouted until their throats gave out. The lamp-keeper's daughter chalked the word CAT in a looping hand on the board by the lifeboat house so the sea would know whose watch it was. Through the night her outline stayed fixed against the sky, the curl of her tail turned towards the water.
At first light the Mary Ellen came round the point with her sails in rags. Nobody saw the cat leave the wall. Every spring since, someone on Pellow quay paints a small heart on the stone where she sat, and every spring the first boat out takes a look over its shoulder to check she is still there.
