Black outline elephant with a small blue flower on its body and a purple symbol beside it, tattooed on a forearm.

Elephant outline and purple symbol on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black outline elephant faces right, with a small blue flower with a reddish centre on its body and a purple symbol to its right. The linework is even and the skin inside the elephant outline is left unfilled. Colour is limited to the purple symbol and the blue and red flower, set against the black outlines, and the design runs horizontally across the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The elephant came to the bottom gate of the Affleck garden in the week the runner beans went over, and it stood there a long time with the morning showing through its sides. Nobody had ever coloured it in. Its ears were only lines, and the grass inside it stayed plain and green, the way grass looks through a window. Tom Eyre, who kept the beds, watched it from the potting shed and said that a thing with nothing inside it had no business in a garden paid for by the bushel.

The elephant asked him for one thing only, and it asked politely, its trunk curled the way a clerk holds a pen. It wanted a flower to carry over the river to the lion who waited under the hawthorn, the one with the purple sign burned into his gatepost to say that the bargain still stood. Tom said the beds were not his to give away. He said it again the next morning, and the morning after, until the elephant grew tired of standing and lay down in the lane with its ears spread out in the dust.

On the fourth day Tom went to the back bed and cut a single cornflower with a rust-red heart. He pressed it into the elephant's flank where the skin was empty, and the petals took hold there as if they had always belonged. The elephant rose, thanked him with a low sound like a door being eased shut, and walked off down the lane towards the water.

The next spring a cornflower came up in the back bed with a red centre, though Tom had sown nothing there. He left the bottom gate on the latch for the rest of his life.
