Two elephants with a heart-shaped trunk

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon elephants side by side, each with a raised trunk that curls up and joins to form an outlined heart above them. The design is drawn in black linework with small details such as eyes and toenails, and the body shading is left as bare skin. The image is in colour only through the skin tone, with the composition centred on the tattoo against a plain background.

The elephants had been promised for the drive, not the procession, so when they ambled round the bend of Hollin Road at a quarter past eleven, ears flapping like wet sheets, the whole party stopped talking at once. Their keeper, a thin man called Pym, climbed down from the lorry and shrugged. They had a habit of following music, he said, and the fiddler from the Red Lion had been tuning up in the lane for twenty minutes.

Nobody had told the fiddler. He struck up a reel, and the two animals began to sway, each lifting its trunk toward the other until the tips met over the gravel. Aunt Mags, who had opposed the marquee on the vicarage lawn from the start, pressed a hand to her chest. Tomas leaned in and murmured that his mother would never forgive him for missing this, and Odette found she was laughing too hard to answer.

The trunks curled, looped and knotted, and the crowd gasped as a heart took shape in the air between them, held up by nothing but patience and grey skin. Pym said they only did that when they liked the people in front of them, and he had never seen it happen at a wedding before. Odette thought of her grandmother's sewing tin, the way she used to say that anything made by two pairs of hands held longer than one.

When the trunks dropped, the elephants lumbered back to the lorry without a backward glance. Later, at the bar, Tomas pressed a paper napkin into her palm. On it he had drawn two elephants and a heart, the lines wobbling, one tiny dot for an eye. She still keeps it folded in her purse.
