Nobody in Hull had ever seen an elephant on Cottingham Road at two in the morning, which is why Dora Pike was so sure she had imagined the one standing outside the chip shop. It was grey and thin-legged, and it held a purple loop of wool in its trunk the way a child holds a balloon it has been told not to let go of.

She followed it past the bus shelter, past the shuttered launderette, past the bins left out for Tuesday. The elephant did not hurry. Every few doors it stopped, lifted its head towards a window, and then walked on as if it were ticking names off a list.
At the corner of Spring Bank it finally turned round and waited for her. The wool was tied twice around the tip of the trunk, knotted with care, and Dora understood that it had been made to be found. She picked at the knot without thinking, the way you open a letter addressed to you. Inside the loop was a folded slip of paper with four street numbers in pencil, all of them houses where someone had been living alone that winter.
Underneath, in the same careful hand, were two words: Keep going. The elephant lowered its trunk, set off again towards the river, and Dora, for the first time in a month, went after it.
