Elephant pair fine line tattoo on the side

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single-needle style line drawing shows two elephants side by side, one larger and one smaller, with trunks curling upward. The linework is thin, dark and mostly unshaded, so the outlines carry the whole design against the pale skin. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame with a fabric edge visible at the right, and the image is black and grey.

The calf came through the gap in the hedge trunk first, the way a question arrives, and stopped at the edge of the rhubarb as if it had been told the rhubarb was private. Maud put down her secateurs. Behind it, the mother filled the whole width of the lane, leaning on the gatepost with the patience of someone who had done this before and expected to do it again.

Frank had planted the elder by the south wall the spring their daughter left for Leeds, and it had grown into a tangle that bent over the path like a gossip. The mother reached for its lowest branch and drew it down with the tip of her trunk, unhurried, stripping the berries into a neat pile. The calf watched her, then copied her, curling its small trunk around a single leaf and missing it twice before it held on. Maud laughed, the first proper laugh she had managed since the funeral, and the sound made both animals look up at her with the same mild offence.

The fair had wintered on the common that year, and somebody had been sure to say the herd had strayed from it. Maud had heard the rumours at the post office, along with talk of a council man with a clipboard and a long face. She knew without being told that the mother had not strayed at all. She had come back the way she had gone, along a route she remembered, toward a garden she had once been allowed into.

When they left, the calf turned at the gap and waved its trunk, a loose, looping gesture that Frank would have called showing off. Maud looked at the wet earth where their feet had pressed into the bed. Then she went to the shed, found the spade, and did not fill in the gap in the hedge.
