The rain had found the gap in the tarpaulin again by nine, so by the time the receipt book went soft at the corners, the whole stall smelled of wet cardboard and paraffin. I was sorting buttons into jam jars when a man in a green cagoule leaned his walking stick against my trestle and asked if I had anything with a trunk.

I had a wind-up elephant with a snapped trunk, the sort that turns up in every second box at the market. He turned it over and clicked the key with his thumb. It gave one stiff lurch and stopped. He didn't seem to mind. He tapped the drawing I'd pinned under the cash tin instead, the one Grandad sketched in biro the winter before he died: an elephant made in a single wandering line, head like a sleeping cloud, trunk curled back into a question mark, one front leg lifted as if it had just remembered something.

'That one,' he said. 'Not the tin.' I told him it wasn't for sale. He nodded as though he'd expected that, then asked how much I'd want for it to be copied exactly, and whether the man who drew it would mind. I said Grandad would have given it away and then felt daft for saying it out loud.

I unpinned the drawing, folded it once along the crease Grandad always made, and handed it over. The rain kept drumming on the buttons. For the first time all morning, the curl of that trunk looked like it might finally lift.
