Elephant tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is photographed in a dim room, showing a black outline elephant facing left with shaded texture along its body and legs. Small script reading never forget curves across the top of the elephant's back. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the elephant sits centrally on the arm against a plain skin background with a cluttered room and a sneaker visible behind.

The box had sat on the top shelf of lost property at Crewe for eleven years, behind a tin of wet umbrellas, and nobody had ever asked after it. I fetched the stepladder and brought it down. Inside, wrapped in a Daily Mirror from 1987 gone the colour of weak tea, was a little wooden elephant with its grey paint worn down to bare pine at the knees and the tip of its trunk. Someone had tucked a strip of paper under its feet. The biro had faded but not so much that I couldn't read it: never forget, in careful capitals, the sort of thing a person writes when they are trying not to cry in front of a stranger.

He didn't pick it up straight away. He said his brother had whittled it in a shed in Nantwich, that they had been meant to catch the same train to Holyhead, and that one of them had missed it by a minute. He wanted to know whether anyone had opened the box or read the paper. I told him the truth, which was that it had been logged, shelved and forgotten, and that nobody had read anything at all.

He laughed then, quite suddenly, and said that sounded about right. He left the elephant with me. I stood it on the counter facing the platform doors, the way it had plainly been carved to face, and watched it through the glass until the 14:10 pulled out with its trunk lifted towards the wires.
