Two profile faces and leaves on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A man in round sunglasses with a blue face and dark beard overlaps a woman with a red face, blue eyes and a dark bob fringe, both in profile. A sprig of blue and green leaves sits in the lower left, and the design is outlined in bold black linework. The flat, opaque fills in blue, yellow, red, green and black sit against pale skin and a plain pink background.

The guard at Cold Ash Ford held the two passports up to the lamp, then up to the faces in front of him, and did not like what he saw. Ines had her hair cut square at the jaw. Her brother had the same long bones under a beard he trimmed himself with the kitchen scissors. "You are not the same person," the guard said. "We are the same family," Ines said, "which is the only thing this border ever asks about." He let them through without a stamp, which in that village passed for a blessing.

The crossing was a plank bridge over a river the colour of weak tea. The old ferrymen used to say nobody crossed with green things in their hands unless they could say what the green things were for. Tobias carried a sprig of rue wrapped in wet cloth inside his coat. Halfway over the boards he took it out and held it toward the far bank, where the land had been sold by the acre to men who never planted anything.
On the far side a clerk with a ledger asked what the leaves were. "They are the last thing our mother grew," Ines said. "Then you may take them to the water," the clerk said, because his own mother had died in the same spring and he had not yet found a form for that.
They walked down to the bank together. Tobias opened his hand, and the current took the sprig out from under the bridge, past the guard and the lamp and the ledger, and away toward the sea, which had never once asked anyone for papers.
