Embracing couple portrait on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large portrait tattoo covers the outer thigh, showing a man with slicked-back dark hair and a woman with light brown hair in a close embrace against a soft, pale background. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the skin tones, hair and clothing. The muted palette of browns, greys and skin tones gives the piece a painterly, vintage look, and the figures fill the frame from hip to knee.

Dear Nell, the rain has finally stopped, and from the scaffold above the Crescent's side door I can hear the last trams grinding up Corporation Street. I'm on my third coat of grey for the backdrop. Mr Ashby wants the sky the colour of weak tea, so the couple will look like a photograph that's been left too long in a shop window.

The poster is for the Thursday double bill, forty feet of canvas stretched over battens. He has his hair slicked back like wet slate, and she has her head tipped toward his shoulder, the way people do when they've stopped pretending to be brave. Ashby keeps asking for her mouth to be softer. I keep telling him the softness is in the shadow under the lip, and the shadow is doing all the work.
Last night I stayed on past the lamps going out. A couple came in from the wet, shaking their coats, and stood under the marquee to kiss before going in. Nobody saw me up on the planks except them, and when she laughed into his collar my brush was halfway to the canvas and I nearly dragged a streak of ochre across the whole face. I didn't. I painted her hand on his arm instead and left the rest to the dark.
Ashby came up at midnight and said it was the best thing I'd done for him. I told him it belonged to the pair under the marquee. Tell Mother I'm eating properly. The poster goes up on Monday, and if you walk past you'll see two people holding on tight to a city that has already gone to bed.
