Colour tattoo of a red rose under a gold-rimmed glass dome with the words until the last petal falls, on the thigh, shown in daylight and under UV light.

Enchanted rose under glass dome on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A red rose on a stem with green leaves and fallen pink petals sits inside a gold-rimmed glass dome, with the phrase until the last petal falls on a curved banner below. The design uses bold black outlines, flat fills and a stained-glass pattern in blue and grey behind the rose. The left panel shows the tattoo in daylight, and the right panel shows the same tattoo glowing under UV light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been told a hundred times not to touch the bell jar, so naturally you are standing on an upturned crate at the back of the glasshouse on Skerrow, one palm flat against the cold dome. Outside, the wind is shoving the Atlantic at the harbour wall. Inside, the rose has sat on its glass shelf since before your mother was born, a red bloom on a green stem that never drops a leaf, resting on a little drift of its own pink petals as if someone has dressed a stage for it.

The islanders say the rose belongs to Mrs Penhallow at the top of the hill, and that she keeps it under glass so the gales cannot have it. Your cousin Ruan swears the last petal will fall the day the last ferry leaves, and that the island will go with it. You don't believe him. But every Sunday you count the petals anyway, seven on the shelf, five on the stem, and the blue light from the old stained panes laid across the floor like spilt ink.

Then the storm takes the power. The whole island goes black at once, and you find the storm lamp by feel, carry it in through the rattling door, and hold it up to the dome. The lamp is nothing like the sun. It makes the panes glow, the blues going electric, the rose gone deep and bruised. One petal lifts from the stem, turns once in the draught, and settles against the glass beside your hand, warm as a fingertip.

You don't tell Mrs Penhallow. In the morning the lights come back, the ferry sails on time, and when you return to the glasshouse the rose is exactly as it was, except for the empty place on the stem where that petal used to be. You leave the lamp on the shelf, filled and trimmed, and you go home to bed.
