Storybook rabbits in an ornate frame on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A framed scene shows three rabbits: a taller rabbit in a blue jacket and two smaller rabbits, one wearing red trousers, all set within a gold scrolled frame topped with a heart. Bold outlines and soft shading give the figures a painted, storybook look, with a teal wash behind them. Gold, teal, red and blue ink make the piece colour-led, and the frame fills most of the thigh.

Mrs Tolley had never once let the damp get at the picture frame, so when the gale took the north window out, Wren Hartley was the one who had to carry it down the spiral stairs. The frame was gold gone brown at the corners, with a heart at its crown where the glass had cracked years before. Inside, three rabbits sat on a bank under a teal sky: the tall one in his blue jacket, the small one in red trousers, and the little one with a ribbon at her collar looking off to the edge where the painter had stopped.

Her grandfather had kept the lamp lit for forty years and had never once mentioned the picture. Wren had asked him about it at nine, and he had said only that the rabbits were waiting for someone to come up the hill with a basket. She had thought it was a joke. Now, with rain hammering the glass room above her and the lamp turning its slow white arm over the water, she understood he had meant it plainly.
The lamp failed at two in the morning. She climbed to the lantern with a torch in her teeth and a tin of paraffin under one arm, and found the wick black and the mantle split. Her hands shook. Below her, through the open trap, she could hear the boats calling to each other in the dark like lost children.
At dawn, the fog lifted and a fishing boat came in under the headland. A boy ran up the path with a wicker basket, his mother's bread wrapped in cloth, and Wren laughed out loud because the sight of him was so exactly what the picture had been waiting for. She hung the frame back on its hook. The little rabbit still looked away toward the edge, and Wren decided it was looking at the sea.
