A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper of the seed vault at Harrow Deep counted every measure twice, once with the scale and once with her mouth, because the scale lied when the wind came up the shaft. Her apprentice, a boy called Ewan Sallow who had come up from the hydroponic sumps with ink on his fingers, thought this was foolishness until the winter the pumps failed.

They rationed by the old word. Every crate was stamped with it, one word cut into the lid in a looping hand that the first settlers had carved so the children could read it before they could count. Enough. When the stock ran low, the keeper would stand at the hatch, lift the lid, and say it aloud, and the people took only what the word covered and no more. Ewan thought it was a prayer. It was really a scale.

One night a stranger came down the ladder with a sack of dried fish and a hungry look, and asked for more than the word allowed. The keeper did not argue. She took his hand and traced the tail that rose from the last letters and curled back up beside the crate like a rope drawn tight, and she said that it came round because a measure ought to return to where you started. He took what the word allowed and went up the ladder without a complaint.

In spring the pumps came back on. Ewan took the stamp to the crates himself, and when he cut the new lid he found his hand making the flourish without being told. The keeper watched him from the hatch and said nothing, which he understood to be praise.
